FLINTSHIRE HISTORICAL SOCIETY REPORT OF THE COUNCIL FOR THE YEAR 1984 The following meetings took place: February: Joint meeting with the Denbighshire Historical Society at the Dean's Library, St. Asaph. The Marquess of Anglesey, Chairman of the Historic Buildings Council, gave a talk about the work of the Council. Lecture at Ysgol y Castell, Rhuddlan, by Dr Llinos O. W. Smith. 'The Statute of Rhuddlan, 1284'. March: A.G.M. at Hawarden, followed by papers by members: 'The N.U.M. North Wales Branch Records', by Mr Paul Mason and 'The Early Industrial History of Deeside', by Mr T. Wesley Hughes. Visit to the deserted village site at Hen Gaerwys led by Mr and Mrs M. B. Hill. June: Excursion to Dolgellau and district: an historical and architectural tour of the town led by Mr D. Morris and Mr P. Thomas with a visit to Nannau. Leaders: Mr R. O. Thomas and Mr R. G. Waters. An evening walk through the Wepre Woods. Members and friends were shown the site of Wepre Hall and Ewloe Castle and were told their history by Miss J. Glendenning and Mr M. Howarth, members of the Alyn & Deeside Council's Park Rangers staff. An evening walk through the lanes around Llanasa, led by Mr Donald Bell. It was a varied and fascinating walk during which we saw and heard the history of everything from Bronze Age burial mounds through historic houses to the notables buried in the modem cemetery. July: Whitford and Downing. A very popular field trip held jointly with the Mold Branch of the North Wales Naturalists' Trust, led by Mr Norman Closs Parry and Mr Gerald Davies. After visiting the church, we walked through the woods of Downing, once the estate of Thomas Pennant, the noted 18th century naturalist and antiquary. Excursion to Capesthome and Marton Church where Mr Raymond Rush addressed the members. Leaders: Miss J. I. Cook and Miss E. Willson. August: Visit to the excavation in progress at the Roman site at Prestatyn where all was explained by Mrs Marion Blockley of the Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust. Members were particularly interested in the bath house and the remarkable collection of brooches found during the excavation. We were very pleased to be joined by members of the Chester Archaeological Society on this visit. September: A day out on the hills above Roe-Wen, looking at archaeological sites including a cromlech, a hillfort and ancient field boundaries as well as a stone circle and part of the Roman road from Canovium (Caerhun) to Segontium (Caemarfon). Leader: Mr Kenneth Brassil, Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust. Excursion to Bridgnorth: an historical tour of the town including the
