Profit from the hill The uplands may be picturesque, but they are difficult and costly to farm. Wet, cold and acid. Yet in Britain there are over forty thousand holdings on the hill, amounting to 31% of our total agricultural acreage. The Hill Farming Act has made practicable the long-term reclamation and improvement of such land. Today, with careful management-including the use of fertilizers-some of the most unproductive land can be made to yield a profit. Much of the work done by I.C.I. is directly helping the hill farmer. For example, the importance of nitrogen as a means of extending the effective grazing season, and of increasing the production of grass for winter feed, is becoming widely re- cognised. By research into these fundamental problems of farm management, in all conditions, I.C.I. is contributing to increased yields and an ever-growing profit from the hill. for Agriculture
