writing would have made most interesting reading. A glance inside the cover of The Taming of Genghis shows that he has achieved his ambition. The story begins in Iceland with the capture of the falcon. The main part of the book describes, with digressions that happily enhance the story, the long and engrossing period during which the bird becomes a member of the falconer's team (the word training, I think, gives a wrong impression of the process). The last two chapters bring an unexpected turn to events, and I confess I looked at the ending before I had finished the book. This is an absorbing story of a fascinating art by a writer who is not only a fanatical falconer, but a very acute observer of all that goes on around him. A.L.J.
