lake and adjoining on its northern side the profusion of ancient small fields of Newborough village. Before the enclosure award of 1843 this was common land, but even after allocation to new owners it was apparently never worth fencing. Though subject to some light grazing by cattle and sheep, its main return was in the form of rabbits and marram grass, both of which figured largely in the local economy. The presence of the Liver Fluke and the abundance here of its snail host (Limnaea truncatula) has rendered this damp and undrained low-quality grazing especially dangerous to stock in wet summers. The area is of great ecological and physiographic interest as the boundary between mobile and fixed sand, and the graduation between open and close plant communities passes right through it. Its acquisition also completes the whole series of dune habitats along the line of the prevailing wind and through the deepest dimension of the dune system. It may prove necessary during the breeding season and certain periods of bird migration to limit access in certain areas, but there will be no restriction on rights of way. Anyone wishing to under- take research or collect animals or plants will need a permit.
