NOTES FROM THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF WALES DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY FLORA OF GLAMORGAN Work on the preparation of a new Flora of Glamorgan was started in 1969, under the auspices of the Cardiff Naturalists' Society. A committee was formed, drawn largely from the Botany Departments of the National Museum of Wales and the University Colleges of Cardiff and Swansea and it was decided that the recording should be done on the basis of a 5 km. square. Publicity, through the Press, Radio and circular letters, produced over 80 volunteers. During 1972 six field meetings were held in various parts of the county, from Merthyr Mawr and Cardiff Docks in the South to Resolven in the North. Members of staff of the Botany Department, N.M.W., together with Mr. A. E. Wade, have spent many days in the field recording throughout the county and in the west of the county Dr. Q. O. N. Kay, the joint recorder, has covered most of the Gower and the Swansea region. Records made during this field work, together with those received from the 40 or so active field workers, has resulted in at least some records being received from 93 of the 118 whole or part squares in the county. A great deal of work, however, still remains to be done. Simplified Recording Sheets, which list about 120 common plants that are considered to be unmistakable, were prepared for the benefit of those who wished to help but who, through lack of botanical experience, were unable to participate in the main recording programme. Copies of these simplified sheets were also circulated through the good offices of the Glamorgan Education Department, to all schools in the area in the hope that, whilst providing an ideal introduction to field work, they might also stimulate the interest of school children in the subject of Botany and, at the same time, produce a positive end result of considerable use to the Flora of Glamorgan project. The response so far has been encouraging. If you know of any records of Glamorgan plants or will be visiting Glamorgan within the next few years and are prepared to record, please contact the Hon. Secretary, Flora of Glamorgan Committee, Mrs. A. B. Pinkard, Department of Botany, National Museum of Wales. All records will be welcome provided they can be accurately localized to a 5 km. square. WELSH FLOWERING PLANTS Work on the preparation of a third edition of Welsh Flowering Plants is now well in hand. This edition will differ in many respects from its two predecessors. Distribution maps will be included of all but the very rare and very common species. These will be updated maps produced by the Biological Recording Centre based on the 10 km. square. Critical
