but were continuous until the end of March in 1983, 'Sugar' was used from October 1982 until all trapping ceased. Comment The marked reduction in the number of species so far observed at Cnwch Coch could well be due to environmental factors. In order to demonstrate the influence intensive grassland husbandry and high stocking rates on both lowland and upland pastures may have had on grass feeding/stem boring noctuid larvae, a few examples from light-trap results are worth recording. The first figure is the total number of specimens resulting from continuous trapping for the years 1952 and 1955, followed by the totals for continuous trapping for 1981 and 1982. The List of Recorded Species The list is arranged according to Kloet & Hincks (1972). The symbol indicates a species not previously recorded; where the letter s. appears in brackets before the figure it indicates the number of specimens observed at sugar; otherwise the figure in brackets following the year refers to the number caught in a Robinson light-trap employing a 150 watt. 'Pearl' bulb, operated by time switch during all the hours from dusk until dawn. It was found that during the months of February and March 1983, the same individuals were returning to 'sugar' or the light-trap in some instances and had been previously marked to verify this; therefore figures for these two months are somewhat inflated.
