Castle; early paper-making in the Swansea area; the Church School controversy; and the life of Elizabeth Benson. David Farmer's book on John Humphrey tells the story of this self-taught Swansea builder/architect who was responsible for the erection of numerous notable chapels and schools including Tabernacl, Morriston (now a Grade 1 Listed Building) and Terrace Road School. The 1997-98 programme of lectures is being very well supported and Professor Alan Lloyd's lecture on 'The Valley of the Kings' attracted a capacity audience to the Museum's lecture room. We have continued to support the Museum Education Service and especially the live presentations of the characters and times of Mrs Mahoney, wife of the first caretaker of the Swansea Museum building in the 1840s. The Social Committee is in the process of reorganisation following the retirement as Chairman of Mrs Nansi Mascetti, who organised, as her final event in that office, the Summer Party, which was enjoyed by all who attended. The Museum staff have had a particularly busy period since our last A.G.M. and have supervised two most successful exhibitions on Puppetry and on Teapots. In the meanwhile improvements to the Museum building continue and general interest in its collections is increasing as the public realise the importance of this historic gem in their home city.
