NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGY DAY IN SWANSEA MUSEUM National Archaeology Week, celebrated by museums and heritage institutions across Britain, gives everyone an opportunity to explore archaeology, find what it is all about, handle ancient objects and experience the excitement of the dig. There are excavation open days, guided tours, exhibitions, lectures and workshops at which you can learn new skills and ancient crafts. The week is organised by the Council of British Archaeology and the Young Archaeologists' Club. For the past three years Swansea Museum has celebrated National Archaeology Week with special events which have proved increasingly popular. This year the staff held a Neighbourhood Archaeology day on 15 July, in partnership with the Glamorgan Gwent Archaeological Trust. Also participating were the West Glam- organ Archive Service, the Gower Society, the Gwerin Gwyr re-enactment group, the Swansea Metal Detectorists' Club and the Friends of Oystermouth Castle. Over 600 people enjoyed the activities provided, which included metal detecting, Roman cooking, making 'prehistoric' pots, and learning how to wash archaeological finds. Visitors were invited to bring their own finds for identification by experts at the Finds Roadshow, where they could talk to professionals about archaeology in their neighbourhood. All in all, it was a most successful day which introduced the fascination of archaeology to a wide range of people, young and older.
