L. vjd. WILLIAM LL. DAVIES. (To be continued.) Alpha '— « Uriel These two anonymous poetical works have long puzzled cataloguers. It may therefore be helpful to put into print the result of inquiries with regard to the author and his works. Thomas Jones of Rhosllanerchrugog Hall, Denbighshire, graduated from Jesus College, Oxford, in 1840, and was admitted a member of the Middle Temple in 1845. He practised at the Parliamentary Bar, with Chambers at 2 Plowden Buildings, Temple. His first work, Alpha, was published anonymously in 1841, with a dedication to Henry Raikes, Esq., M.A., Registrar of the diocese of Chester, in slight testimony of friendship and admiration.' The short preface states that the poem was written in May, 1840. In Notes and Queries, Sept., 1864, a corres- pondent writes Alpha, remarkable book in itself, and for the notes appended to it, was by a young Welshman named Jones.' The second book, Uriel and other poems, was published in 1857, with a note- part of this poem was written in 1852 most of it in 1854.' No name is given, but it was quickly followed by Poems by the author of Uriel,' 1858, which was issued in a second edition with additions in the same year.
