"History of Llandrinio," vol. xxviii. The descent however is wrong, two Humphrey Griffiths' having been confused. Humphrey, son of Roger Griffiths oi Tirymynech was a different person. A similar error appears on page 165 under Griffiths of Glanhavren" which is as now given. The Glanhavren property appears to have come through the marriage of Richard Griffithes of Llandis- ilio and Margaret Piers of Pool. In 1580-1 there was a Fine & Recovery Suit, Rees Taunat and Richard Williams against Richard Griffiths, gent, re messuages and lands and 21 8 rents in Tyddyn Pridd (Glanhavren) Trehelig, Poole, Rhandregynwen, Llanerchula, Haugh- ton. Russnant and Domgay. SlIt WiLLIAM HUMPHREYS,1 Baronet, LORD Mayor of London, 1727. On being created a Baronet, Sir William Humphreys claimed the right to the arms of 1 When Sir William was made Sheriff of London in 1704 he applied for Arms to Peter le Neve, Norroy King of Arms, who sought the assistance of Bishop Humphreys of Hereford, a great authority on Welsh genealogies, for his pedigree this they drew up connecting him with the tribe of Brochwel Ysgythrog through a branch of the family of Sir Griffith Vychan (Vaughan) of Garth. The Arms were granted accordingly, and in the Patent he is described as "being now (1717) the only son of Nathaniel Humphreys, Citizen of London, who was second son of William ap Humfrey of Penrhyn Vayor in Deyddur and of Llandrinio in the County of Montgomery." So far so good but who was this Humfrey 1 The Pedigree makes him to be Humphrey ap Griffith ap David Vychan ap Griffith ap Rinallt ap Sir Griffith Vychan. But the Rev W. Valentine Lloyd, late Co-editor of the Mont. Coll., and the greatest authority on Mont gomeryshire Genealogies, and especially on that of Garth of which he was a lineal descendant, denies its accuracy and shows there was no evidence of such a connection. Was there then any other William ap Humphrey that answers the requirements ? There was a considerable landowning family in the neighbourhood, the Griffitheses, and I think that Mr. AY. A. Griffiths is right in his tentative assumption that William ap Humphrey of Llandrinio and Penrhyn fawr, Lay Subsidy Roll 1605-6," was a brother of Richard Griffithes ulias Richard ap Humphrey, and the son of Humphrey Griffithes of Trederwen, Llanercheela, Russnant and Collfryn." His brother's law-suit about Gwirglodd Vawr confirms the connextion. See Mont. Coll. xiv, 13-29.—ED.
