Charles Powell was a son of Richard Powell, who married Katherine, daughter of Hugh Powell of Ednop, and he (Richard) was a brother of David Powell of Weston. Chas. Powell had a cousin, William, the son of his uncle, Arthur Powell, who may be the William Powell mentioned in the Will. In the old Deed you will see that Ty Richard Powell" was part of the property. This led me to suppose that William Powell of Dyffryn Llanvair was a son of Richard Powell of Dyffryn Llanvair, who was on a Grand Jury in 1634, and who is probably identical with Richard Powell who married Katherine, daughter of Hugh Powell of Ednop. If I could see the Will of Richard Powell (which I have failed to discover) the question would be solved. The Parish Registers have, so far, not helped me but I have not been able to make a thorough search. The population of the parish of Newtown in 1695 is stated to have been about 328, so there could not have been many William Powells there 2 My late father, Samuel Powell of Ivy House, Welshpool, told the late Mr. Morris C. Jones (Hon. Sec. of Powysland Club) that William Powell, Senior, married a Shropshire lady of good family, but he had forgotten the name. He also said that this William Powell had extravagant tastes, and that he kept a pack of fox- hounds." 3 Samuel Powell was a son of Thomas Powell of Llivior (see Welshpool Pedigrees). 4 Matthew Powell was an offieer in the army, and was killed by a fall from his horse. 5 Susan Powell married her cousin, William Powell of Buttington Hall.
