Most of the first membrane is covered by accounts relating to Chester. A t the head appears, Robertus de Notingham Baro, Hugo de Glannvill, auditores.} ACCOUNT of John Paynel, Chamberlain of Chester, by letters patent of Edward, firstborn son of King Edward, lately King of the English, Duke of Aquitaine and Earl of Chester, Porthieu and Montreuil, dated 17th Dec. in the 20th year of the reign of King Edward [1326], his father, by which the said King constituted the said John his Chamberlain of Chester, so that he answers to the said Edward for the issues arising therefrom. And he answers for the issues of the said chamberlain- ship from the aforesaid 17th day of Dec. till the 24th day of Jan. next following, on which day King Edward, the father, ceased from the rule of the realm, and the aforesaid Edward, his firstborn son, assumed the government of the realm and from the said 24th day of January till the Feast of St. Michael next following, the first year ending: and from the said Feast of St. Michael till the 13th day of March next following, in the 2nd year, by the same letters, before he delivered the office of the chamberlain aforesaid with all things pertaining to that office to Thomas de Blaston by the King's writ and
