In the fee which the said Robert holds of the king, ROS [Rhos] and REWENIOU [Rhufoniog]1 are 12 leagues of land in length and 4 leagues in width. There is land (enough) for 20 ploughs only. It is valued at 12 pounds. All the rest of the land is woods and moors, and cannot be ploughed. Additional Note to the Translation.-The league of the record appears to have been a mile and a half long, but the wood- land and township measurements in leagues must not be regarded as anything but the roughest estimates. It is necessary to keep in mind that when Domesday speaks of a place as held by a cer- tain tenant, it does not follow that the whole of it is thereby meant. For the vills. sometimes comprised other manors which form the subject of separate entries. Wepre is a good example (pp. 11. 18). 1. The northern parts of the modem Denbighshire.
