FLINTSHIRE HISTORICAL SOCIETY REPORT OF THE COUNCIL FOR THE YEAR 1959 MEMBERSHIP-The Hon. Treasurer's Report shows that income from subscriptions was much the same in 1959 as in 1958. A very slight decrease was made up by writing to people who had not paid their subscriptions in the year and by the cheques that this appeal brought in. Actually membership in the year has been very fluid. There have been many resignations and many new members. Letters have been sent out to all members in arrears pointing out that the Journal would be posted only to people who had paid their subscriptions up to date. With the increased cost of printing and the urgent need to carry out rescue work on historic and archaeolo- gical sites menaced with destruction-& duty the Society can hardly avoid-there is an urgent need for a drive for an increased membership. The Council are grateful to all those who have introduced new members during the year. MEETINGS-The following lectures were given in 1959 at meetings of the Society 17th January Mr. J. D. K. Lloyd, C.B.E., M.A., f.s.a. — "Archaeology in Wales". 7th February Mr. J. Gwilym Jones, M.A.Daniel Owen". 7th March Mr. T. G. E. Powell, r.s.A."The Antecedents of Powys and Gwynedd". 11th April: Mr. Norman Tucker, F.B.Hist.s. — "The Conwy Family of Bodrhyddan". 7th November Miss Dorothy Sylvester, M.A.The Maelor Landscape". 5th December Mr. D. A. Nicholls — "The Caves of Lascaux". In collaboration with the Extra-Mural Department of the University College of North Wales, Bangor, a course of five lectures was given at Prestatyn in the autumn on "History and Records". The Secretaries of the Society are always glad to receive suggestions as to possible lecturers. It is very useful if members can tell the Secretaries, on a postcard, what lectures they actually enjoyed. Information of this sort helps when arranging a new programme. EXCURSIONS-The Society had the good fortune in 1959 to acquire the services of Mr. J. R. Humphry Williams, as Excursions Secretary and his energy, devotion, popularity and organising ability resulted in one of the most successful summer seasons the Society has yet had. Two coaches ran full on each excursion and the programme was generally well appreciated. Four excursions wore arranged 23rd May Llanrhos Church, Gloddaeth Hall and Bodysgallen. Leaders Mrs. E. Taylor and Mr. Norman Tucker, F.R.H1sT.S. 27th June: Harlech Castle, Egryn and Llanaber Church. Leaders Mr. T. T. Pennant Williams, F.S.A. and Mr. Ffrangcon Lloyd, A.R.I.B.A. 18th July St. Asaph Cathedral and Pengwem Hall. Leaders Mr. H. A. Cleaver and Mr. Ffrangcon Lloyd. 19th September Bodidris Hall, Llandegla and Llanarmon Churches. Leaders Mr. Ffrangcon Lloyd and Mr. George Lloyd. The thanks of the Society are due to the Excursions Secretary and Mrs. Humphry Williams, the leaders of the very successful trips, the people who opened their houses to large parties of members of the Society, and particularly to Miss Houghton, who gave the Society a splendid tea at Pengwern.
