Buddicom added to the estate he inherited from his brother by purchasing 3,000 acres of the Nant Glyn Estate. In 1898 the stock on the Home Farm was worth £853-15-0 and cost £ 1,300-15-8 per annum to keep. There were 53 cattle, 305 sheep, 12 pigs and 2 calves.161 In 1904 Major Buddicom brought a steam cart from Mann's Steam Cart Co. to work in the grounds of Penbedw. He calculated that in 1905 it did £ 190 worth of work, having made a profit in 1904 of £ 15-9-2 after one year's de- preciation of £ 60 the deficiency was £ 46-4-10 in 1905.1M In 1910 Penbedw Hall was fitted with electricity. The engineers for this undertaking were Paterson and Cooper of European Works, Pownall Road, Dalston London. The system was designed and erected by E. George Tidd, esq., A.M.Inst.C.E., M.I.E.E., and was run and main- tained by the chauffeur, T. Wilcox. It never broke down. In 1911 it cost £ 151 to run for that year the forest for the same year cost £ 241-8-6. In the stable in 1911 the wages bill was £ 99-12-5 and the fodder cost £ 60-19-5 for the same year.188 VII WALTER DIGBY BUDDIOOM, M.C. He was the son of H. W. Buddicom. Born 1894, he joined the 4th Hussars, and was killed in France in 1918, on active service. VIII Venetia Digby BUDDICOM She was the daughter of H. W. Buddicom. She was educated at North Foreland Lodge, Broadstairs,154 and at the University College of North Wales, Bangor, where she read Forestry. She was a friend of the novelist Miss Freya Stark, and is mentioned in 'Letters' and The Valley of the Assassins. By all accounts she was not fond of school, but loved Penbedw and the outdoor life, spending much money on improving the estate. She lived all her life at Penbedw, which was left to her on the death of her father, her mother going to live at Bordighera. Miss Buddicom's strong personality may be seen in the fact that she refused to be presented at Court. When she died in 1969 the property was divided and part was bought by Effold Developers. Sometime before her death, the Hall, which, because of local regulations was not able to be pulled down in part (it had 30 bedrooms), was taken down totally. The black oak from it now panels the Village Hall in Nannereh.166 imd/B 32. "*D/B 33. 158D/B 34. 154I am grateful to Miss Yates, Ciloain Hall, for this information. "•See 160 above.
