I will now try and pierce the gloom that covers this dark period. Edward Lloyd ap David Lloyd of the 1528 and 1536 deeds lived at Gaerfawr in the Township of Varchoel in Guilsfield Parish. There were two independent properties in Varchoel named Gaerfawr. The one North of the ancient camp from which the name is derived belonged in the 18th Century to the Pryce family. The will of Thomas Pryce of Gaerfawr, gent., dated 1736, mentions his brother, Robert Pryce. Robert Pryce was of Maesgwyn and the initials R. P. in the inscription- inserted in nails on the north west door of Guilsfield Church, refers to him when Churchwarden. Captain E. Calcott Pryce, C.B.E., our High Sheriff and also Alderman and past Sheriff of the City of London, is his direct descendant. The Lloyds of Gaerfawr lived at the Southern Gaerfawr, later owned by the Mytton family. The pedigree of the Lloyds of Gaerfawr is given among those compiled in 1700 by John Davies of Llansilin and preserved in the British Museum in Add. MSS. 9864/5. It is as follows:- LLOYD OF GAERFAWR. David Lloyd ap Griffith of Gaerfawr ap Reinalt ap Sir Griffith Vaughan. md. Joyce, dr. of Edward, Lord Dudley. Edward Lloyd = Maud, dr. of Jenkin Hanmer of Hanmer.
