Notes on various Kyffyn Families residing around Llanfyllin in the 17th Century (CONTINUED)* By WILLIAM ARTHUR GRIFFITHS, Officier d'Academie I left off my Notes on the above subject in a rather unsatisfied way. Despite all the work done, the original purpose of the enquiry, viz., to ascertain the parentage of Henry Kyffin, Bailiff of Llanfyllin in 1708, had failed. The compiler of the Kyffin portion in Pedigrees of Caernarvonshire and Anglesey Families, published in 1914, gave his father as Charles Kyffin of the Glascoed in Llansilin and Cae Coch in Llangadfan family. I had proved, from a lawsuit arising out of his death in 1669 regarding his estates, that Henry Kyffin of Llanfyllin could not have been his son as Charles Kyffin had left an only child, Lowry Kyffin, who was buried at Llanfyllin on 30th November, 1673, aged eight. Upsetting, as I had, the hitherto accepted family pedigree, I felt compelled to try and find the correct one and had failed. In my last article I recommended that the present day Kyffins, Captain J. T. Kyffin of Kingswear, South Devon, and his sister, Mrs. Grace of Alverstoke, my own place of residence, should complete my enquiries, but Captain Kyffin, quite understandably, preferred to let sleeping dogs lie and Mrs. Grace could not spare the time. I suggested to Mrs. Grace that, as 1958 was the 250th Anniversary of her forebear, Henry Kyffin, being Bailiff of Llanfyllin in 1708, it would be an appropriate occasion for her to visit Llanfyllin and the Mayor had told me how welcome such a visit would be, but Admiral Grace was not well enough to make the journey and the whole matter seemed ended. Early in 1959 I unexpectedly received a letter from Mr. E. Ronald Morris, History Master at Llanfyllin School and a member of the Powysland Club, saying that he had read my "Kyffin" articles with great interest and offered to help. I gladly accepted his kind offer, and he made a new search of the Llanfyllin Parish Registers and also the Bishops' Transcripts of them at the National Library at Aberystwyth. He brought to light many new entries which had escaped earlier searchers, but found no trace of the baptism of any Henry Kyffin between 1660 Other contributions by the author on this subject were published in Vols. 52, 54 and 55.
