and 1690. He then searched the Llanfihangel, Llanrhaeadr, and Hirnant Registers but in vain. New Kyffin wills were traced but no mention of the parentage of Henry Kyffin, Bailiff of Llanfyllin in 1708, could be found. Once again the whole matter came to an end, at least so I then thought. As Christmas, 1959, drew near, the annual problem of finding suitable cards arose. I wanted to send one to my cousin, Alderman Calcott Pryce, but instead I decided not to send a Christmas card, but to write for him a short account of the various "Pryce" families in the Guilsfield, Meifod, and Llanfyllin areas. To do this, I had to study afresh my many notebooks in which I enter extracts from various public records, etc. I had made a lot of them from the records of the Manor of Mechain Uwch Coed when compiling my Articles on Ann Griffiths of Dolwar Fach (M.C., Vol. 53, Part I) and on Richard Tudor, the Welshpool philanthropist (M.C., Vol. 53, Part II). Among these extracts I saw again, with new eyes, the following extracts from the Manor Rental Lists, viz. Rents of Assize for Townships of Cadwynfa, Fynnon Arthur, and Varchoel in Llanfihangel Parish 1675. Henry Kyffin, gent., paid Is. 6d. for Griffith ap Roger's lands. 1685-6-7. Henry Kyffin, gent., paid Is. 6d. for Griffith ap Roger's lands. 1745. Mr. Henry Kyffin paid Is. 6d. I then suddenly wondered whether my extracts from the Recovery Rolls (Land Transfers), 1630-1735, at the Public Record Office, London, made so laboriously a few years ago, contained any mention of a Kyffin buying lands from a Griffith ap Roger. I turned up my lists again and found the following : 1634. William Kyffin, gent., purchased from Owen ap Jeuan, gent., five messuages, lands, etc., lying in Cadwinfa and Llaethbwlch in Llanfihangel Parish. This showed that the Kyffins did own property in Cadwinfa and its adjoining township of Llaethbwlch, but it came from Owen ap Jeuan and not from Griffith ap Roger. I continued the examination of my notes and found the following entry, dated 1638. This is evidently a family Trust matter, as John Mathews of Trenanney in Meifod married Anne Penryn of Russnant in Deythur, while William Kyffin's mother was Margaret Penryn of Russnant. Here is the extract 1638. William Kyffin, gent., transferred to John Mathews, Esq., and John Kyffin, gent., fifteen messuages, lands, etc., lying in Bodfach, Bodyddon, Cadwynfa, Brithdir, Llaethbwlch, Globwell, and Llanfyllin.
