THE SHERIFFS OF MONTGOMERYSHIRE J. D. K. LLOYD, F.S.A. Amongst the outstanding contributions to the early volumes of the Montgomery- shire Collections were the accounts of the Sheriffs of the County by the Rev. William Valentine Lloyd. These articles appeared in volumes II, III, IV, V, VI, and IX. In Vol. II appeared a list of the Sheriffs from 1541 (the date of the commencement of the shrievalty) to 1626. The list was followed in this and subsequent volumes by genealogical and biographical notices of individual sheriffs and their families, with their arms. The notices of individual sheriffs, continued as far as the shrievalty of John Newton of Heightley in 1638, were then collected and issued in a limited edition of 200 copies as "The Sheriffs of Montgomeryshire 1540 to 1639" (sic). In 1893, however, Mr. Lloyd resumed the series with the shrievalty of Sir Richard Price (1639), the accounts of the individual sheriffs being prefaced by a list of the sheriffs from 1627 to 1686. This list concluded with the words "to be continued" and it was evidently the intention of the author to go forward with his detailed accounts of each sheriff. These detailed accounts, however, terminated with the account of George Llewelyn in 16761, and Volume XXVII (1893) is the last to contain any of these articles: the death of the author, the Rev. W. V. Lloyd, is recorded in Vol. XXIX (1896). The continuation of the series has long been a desideratum and it is hoped to resume the articles in future volumes of the Collections. In the meantime, before a start is made on accounts of the individual sheriffs over a period of no less than 290 years, (an undertaking which will itself inevitably extend over very many years) it seems desirable to record in this journal at least the bare names of the sheriffs with their years of office; and it is hoped that this list may be useful in many ways to those interested in the history of the county. The sources of information in the list which follows are these: From 1676 to 1832 inclusive, The Public Record Office Lists and Indexes No. IX: List of Sheriffs for England and Walesfrom the earliest times to 1831 (published 1898). From 1833 to 1848 from Thomas Nicholas's County Families of England and Wales (1872). 1 W. V. Lloyd's dates are the years in which the sheriffs completed their term of office.
