THE SHERIFFS OF MONTGOMERYSHIRE FROM 1676 J. D. K. LLOYD, LL.D., F.S.A. FOREWORD A factual list of the sheriffs of the county from 1676 was given in the last volume (60) of Montgomeryshire Collections and it is intended, following the example set by the Rev. W. V. Lloyd in earlier volumes, to give a short account of each holder of the office. In the more spacious days of the last century the account of each sheriff from 1540/1541 to 1675/76 was preceded by a "trick", or drawing of his arms -in the following accounts it has been thought sufficient to blazon them (where known) in the accepted heraldic terms. When ancestors of sheriffs were themselves sheriffs, it has been thought un- necessary to give their family history beyond these ancestors and, in such cases, reference will be made to the earlier series. For reasons of space the author of these earlier articles will be referred to as "W.V.Ll." For some reason the Rev. W. V. Lloyd gave the year in which a particular shrievalty ended-in the following accounts the year (and day of the month where known) given is that of the commencement of the shrievalty. I should like, in conclusion, to take this opportunity of acknowledging the very great assistance I have already received from Mr C. F. H. Evans of Montgomery, Mr. E. R. Morris of Llanfyllin, and Mr. J. W. Davies of Ayles- bury. Any errors are, of course, my own. 1676 DAVID MAURICE (appointed 10th November) Arms Per fess sable and or, a lion rampant counterchanged The Maurices of Penybont and Lloran Uchaf derived their descent from Ieuan Gethin of Lloran Uchaf in Llansilin, a parish lying just north of the Tanat and in the county of Denbigh. The family became extinct in the senior male line in the person of our sheriff's grandson Edward Maurice. David Maurice was the elder son of Edward, sheriff in 1640, by Alice, daughter of Andrew Meredith of Glantanat Isaf. According to the account of his father's shrievalty in Mont. Coll. XXVII he was also nominated in 1685;
