and tune to the task by him and his colleagues (Dr. Lloyd and Mr. Glyn Davies). Dr. Lloyd and he also gave of their time some years ago to sorting and re- organising the Club's library. He was elected a Vice President of the Club in 1979. He began his contributions to the Collections with the publication of a series of jottings which he entitled 'An Arwysui Notebook' in Vol. 53 (1953-4) and continued with four further such miscellanies in successive issues; and later for four years from Vol. 57 (1961-1962) he contributed Powysiana which consisted of information about articles relating to Montgomeryshire in various periodical publications. Otherwise, however, apart from the three joint articles with Peter Smith, he wrote only about the Vicars of Trefeglwys and Llangurig (Vol. 54) and about Llanidloes Market Hall (Vol. 61) and finally wrote the obituary of Dr. J. D. K. Lloyd (Vol. 67). He was perhaps happier when imparting his knowledge orally. He spoke so easily and so naturally. So many times over the years members of the Club were indebted to him for his clear and absorbing accounts of places visited during their excursions; and those of us who were privileged to hear his address to the Club in memory of Dr. Lloyd will long remember it. He was constantly in demand, especially after his retirement, to lecture to all manner of societies, including W.E.A. Classes, and it is reassuring to know that a number of his talks have been recorded on tape and on film. Mr. Vaughan Owen joined the Cambrian Archaeological Association in 1932. He became chairman of its Committee from 1960-1963 and President of the Association in 1971 when, not unexpectedly, he chose as the subject of his Presidential Address: 'Some aspects of the Vernacular House in Mid Wales'. He had been a Trustee and member of Committee of the Qwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust from its formation in 1974 until his death. He was a life-long member of the St. Idloes Church, Llanidloes, becoming sidesman, member of the Parochial Church Council, and Churchwarden The diversity of his other interests is shown by his being Chairman of the Montgomery- shire Field Society, and formerly of the Montgomeryshire Literary Group and President of the Arwystli Society, of the Llanidloes Drama Festival and of the Llanidloes Music and Arts Club. He was also a Past President of the Montgomery- shire Society in London. Mr. Vaughan Owen was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1957. He was appointed High Sheriff of Montgomeryshire in 1971. He was unmarried. With his spare figure, his cheerful personality, his active life and his beloved pipe, one somehow felt he would go on for ever. But alas it was not to be. We miss him deeply. We have lost a modest, scholarly, christian gentleman. H. Noel Jerman.
