We have already mentioned some of the houses built in the latter half of the century in brick (Pennant, Garthmyl) but such buildings moved down the social scale, firstly, perhaps, by using brick as infill between the timbers (e.g. the 'New House' of Pryce Jones Esq., now numbers 1 and 2 Church Terrace, which by 1804 was the Plow Inn, kept by Jeremiah Browne) and later by building entirely in brick, the 'New' malt-house, now the Post Office, and the shop blocks). So perhaps some of the people of Berriew lost their mud-huts to live in more comfortable surroundings by the end of our century though for many this meant moving to the House of Industry in their old age a sombre note on which to end our review of Berriew in the eighteenth century.
