His surviving son Richard Henry Jerman inherited his father's ability as an artist and there are several of his works in private possession. Mention has been made of Hugh Jerman's brother in law Edward Salter and of his artistic talent. Salter was born in 1831. In 1853 he became headmaster of the National School, Llanidloes but in 1861 was teaching at the National School New Brompton near Chatham (his eldest daughter Agnes was born in Gillingham in 1863), by 1864 he had moved to the National School, St. John's Kensall Green. However, he was back in Llanidloes as headmaster of the National School Jan. 1867 to March 1869 and in 1871 was living in Short Bridge Street but was, apparently, self-employed having relinquished his teaching career. From 1877 to 1889 his wife was headmistress of Cwmbelan Board School Llanidloes and in the Census Return 1881 Edward Salter living with his family at the school house described himself as 'landscape artist'. Salter was organist at St. Idloes Church and he and his family held concerts in the town in the 1870s seemingly for their own benefit these were certainly well patronised and appreciated. Salter painted a large number of landscapes in oils, which survive. Two of his paintings are at N.L.W. PB9622 Montgomery and PB9892 Aberystwyth. He also made a most interesting large pencil drawing of the Cambrian Flannel Factory Llanidloes dated 1886 — this was three years before the disastrous fire of December 1889 which left the factory in ruins until it was rebuilt in 1891. The drawing is of considerable local history interest and shows the great chimney stack, the workmen's cottages, the Office and rows of flannel stretched on the tenter hooks in the field between the factory and the Van Road. He also illustrated the third edition of Twm Shon Catti J. T. LI. Pritchard printed at Llanidloes in 1871 by J. Pryse and all the illustrations (nine drawings of church, houses etc.) in the Parochial Account of Llanfechain in 'Mont Coll' Vol. V. (1872) are signed 'E. Salter'. E. H. Langford Salter 1870-1949, a son of Edward Salter settled in Neath, Glamorganshire and founded the firm of Salter and Sons, music dealers and organ builders. My grateful thanks are due to Mrs E. Clarke, Mrs H. Jones and especially Mrs D. Williams, granddaughters of Hugh Jerman and to Mrs E. Wilson Jones and Mrs Eluned Jones his greatnieces for their help and interest in the preparation of this short account.
