THE POWYSLAND CLUB Progress and Lectures, 1988-1989 Remaining central to the Club's calendar is its lecture programme, which in the 1988-9 season was as follows: October 22, 1988-College of Further Education, Newtown. 'Historical Farm Buildings of Wales' — Eurwyn Wiliam, MA, PhD. November 26, 1988-Montgomery Town Hall. The Dr J.D.K. Lloyd Memorial Lecture. 'Christian Origins of Montgomeryshire'- Rev. Dr. R.W.D. Fenn, FSA, FRHistS and J.B.Sinclair, FSA Scot. February 11, 1989-College of Further Education, Newtown. 'Recent Excavations at Caersws'- Jenny Britnell BSc. March 4, 1989-Welshpool High School. 'Towns of Rural Wales, A Geographer's View'- Roy Lewis BA, PhD. April 8, 1989-Welshpool High School. 'Montgomeryshire's Debt to William Pugh, Brynllywarch'- Ion Trant of Maesmawr, Esq, BSc. This Lecture was preceded by the Annual General Meeting. It was particularly unfortunate that the final lecture of the season-Ronald Morris's anniversary re-appraisal of Chartism in his native town of Llanidloes-had to be postponed owing to the lecturer's ill-health. The lecture was given in October 1989, and it provided a splendid opening to a new season. The Club continues its efforts to publish monograph volumes, and 1989 saw the appearance of An Index to Volumes 55-74 (1957-1986) of the Montgomeryshire Collections. In 1990 this work will continue with the publications of The Archaeology of Montgomeryshire to AD 1300 by Dr C.J. Arnold; a study of the photographers and old photographs of the district around Llanfair Caereinion by Dr W.T.R. Pryce, and a list of the Chancery Court Pleadings relating to Montgomeryshire to be jointly published by the Club and the National Library of Wales. Many sub-committees of the Club have continued their work, and much of the Club's activity has again focused upon the future of The Powysland Museum and Library. As the Collections go to press this year, the Club's Chairman and Membership Secretary have sought Counsel's opinion on the Club's rights under the trusts governing the Museum and Library. However, I am sure that many members of the Council of the Club would agree that the highlight of the Club's activities in this year centred around the discovery of the long-lost Inspeximus Charter of the Borough of Llanidloes. Members greatly appreciated the warmth and dignity of the occasion when our President presented framed copies of the document to the Mayor of Llanidloes at the town's Council Chamber on Sunday, October 1st1989.
