OBITUARIES MAURICE RICHARDS OF NEWTOWN (1921-1989) The presence of the President of the Powysland Club, of the Chairman and fellow- members of the Council and of many club members on 3 October 1989 in Newtown at the funeral of Mr Maurice Richards was an indication of the regard and affection in which he was held. Members and many others knew of his extensive and detailed knowledge of the history of Newtown. Unfortunately only a portion of the vast store of information gathered by him has appeared in print, the best known being the fruits of his research on Newtown in the last century based on Census returns. Recently Maurice Richards was busily preparing a history of Newtown for publication. He also had material ready for an account of the Pryce Jones family. The material on these and many other topics is immense and has been stored in the most meticulous and exacting manner. It consists not only of reference cards and files but also of pictures, especially on slides, and tapes, mainly recording the reminiscences of elderly citizens. Every person who cherishes local history will want these archives to be used and the contents published: this too is Mrs Maurice Richards's hope. Her wish is that the funeral donations to The Powysland Club be a contribution towards publication costs.
