Chirbury parish church, which was in need of urgent repair. In 1949 he married the Hon. Katharine Odeyne de Grey, daughter of the eighth Baron Walsingham. He is survived by their four sons and two daughters. He is succeeded by his eldest son, John, who returned to this country from Canada in January 1993, to take up responsibilities on the family estates. George Herbert was honourable in name and conduct. M. LL. CHAPMAN H. NOEL JERMAN, CBE, MA, FSA, OStJ VICE PRESIDENT OF THE POWYSLAND CLUB Herbert Noel Jerman died on 19 May 1994 at the age of 84. His career as a civil servant was devoted, in large part, to serving his native Wales, ultimately as Assistant Secretary, The Welsh Office. He then became Chief Officer for Wales, Council for Small Industries in Rural Areas. Noel Jerman was born on 1 December 1909, at Dolforgan Gardens, Kerry, Montgomeryshire, the elder son of John Maurice Jerman. His talents were recognized at an early age by his father's employer, John Bancroft Willans of Dolforgan, Kerry. Willans saw to it that his protege was guided through his schooling at Newtown County Boys' School and then University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, where Jerman gained a first class honours degree in geography followed by the attainment of an MA (with distinction). On leaving university in 1935 he was appointed Keeper, Department of Maps, Prints and Drawings, National Library of Wales. It was here that he met his first wife, Blodwen Elizabeth, the daughter of George Jenkins of Aberystwyth, whom he married in 1939. He served as a Squadron Leader in the Royal Air Force Voluntary Reserves during the war years, 1939- 1945, acting as liaison officer for air intelligence at European headquarters, US Army, and was awarded the US Legion of Merit. At the end of the war he joined the Ministry of Town and Country Planning as a principal officer. In 1951 he transferred to the Welsh Office, initially as a principal officer in the Ministry of Local Government and Planning and from 1957 as Assistant Secretary. He retired as Assistant Secretary in 1970 when he accepted the post of Chief Officer for Wales of the Council for Small Industries in Rural Areas. He continued in this post until 1977 following which he acted as a consultant to the Welsh Development Agency on small businesses for the next three years. Noel Jerman was much concerned with the affairs of rural communities and served on many committees including Powys Rural Council (1974-1977), Standing Conference of Rural Community Councils in Wales (1971-1978). He was also a member of the Rent Scrutiny Board for Mid Wales (1972-1974), Rent Assessment Panel for Wales (1972-1982), Welsh Place Names Advisory Committee (1974-1983), Men- tal Health Review Tribunal for Wales (1976-1982), Wales Advisory Committee of the Design Council, Crafts Commit- tee of the Welsh Arts Council, Court and Council of the National Library of Wales, Court and Council of the Univer- sity of Wales, Board of Celtic Studies of the University of Wales, Welsh Folk Museum Governing Committee and the
