order of merit this was 1. Mrs. Tom Button, Hill Crest, Rhosili. 2. Mrs. H. Whitehead, Roselyn," Southgate. 3. Mrs. H. T. Cole, The Cottage, Kittle. 4. Mr. G. Taylor, 33 Bryn-y-Mor, Three Crosses. 5. In judging the entries for this competition, we have kept in mind the purpose for which the Cup was originally donated-that is, for a well-kept garden designed to fulfil the twin purpose of providing vegetables for the home and also a decorative display of flowers and shrubs, etc. The awards have therefore been made to those entries that provide for the objectives in the best way. We feel, however, that great commendation should also go to those competitors who have concentrated their efforts solely on flower-display, or vegetables, but not on both. In particular the garden of Mrs. Gealer (Parkmill) deserves special mention for the very attractive layout and display of flowers on a difficult site. A suggestion we put forward for consideration for future competition is this, that the flower and vegetable gardens be treated separately, and awards be made for each. Several of the better gardens had colourful displays of flowers, good turf on their lawns, and were very tidy in appearance. The weaknesses we noted in the vegetable section were these little signs of crop groupings for a proper rotation-scheme, wrongly orientated rows, poor representation of salad crops, and practically no herbs. In the flower section, there was the customary tendency to dot like plants about, instead of placing them in large bold groups. Herbaceous plants were on the whole poorly represented in view of the fact that we were at the height of the season for these plants. A pleasing feature of the competition was the big entry from the Gower R.D.C.'s housing estate at Three Crosses and we think that this tendency would be greatly encouraged throughout Gower if the Council would supplement the Gower Society's award by granting some kind of Diploma for well-kept gardens on their estates. This competition, in our opinion, has been really worth while. (Signed) R. HARRIS, Hon. Sec. R. GAMON, Chairman. T. E. REES, Vice-President. Sketty Horticultural Society. The Sidney Heath Silver Cup was duly presented to Mrs. Button by Mr. Sidney Heath himself, together with a cheque for five pounds. When the Cup is handed back for next year's com- petition the 1959 winner will receive a little bronze commemoration plaque for fastening to her door.
