Originally the theatre was known simply as 'the Theatre', the term 'Theatre Royal' being reserved for Covent Garden and Drury Lane which operated under Letters Patent from Charles II. The Theatres Act of 1843 required all theatres to be licensed by local magistrates and following this requirement many took the name Theatre Royal without the right to do so as was the case in Swansea, the term thus becoming nothing more than a generic title for playhouse. 24.
