Old Henllys, 1996. B.M. OLD GOWER FARMHOUSES AND THEIR FAMILIES by Bernard Moms Produced by the Gower Society as the special publication for the Jubilee Year, this hardback volume has one hundred and ninety-two pages in A4 format. It contains scale drawings, photographs and detailed descriptions of thirty Gower farmhouses and cottages, carefully chosen to illustrate a variety of dates and styles, and together these give an insight into how people lived in the peninsula in the last four centuries and even before that. The author, a chartered surveyor and Fellow of the Society of Anti- quaries of London, is a long-standing member of the Society, and although most of the research and survey work has been specially done during the last two years, his notes go back to the 1950s and several long-vanished but significant houses are also included. As well as describing the houses, which include such interesting buildings as Pitt, Old Henllys (and its cellars), Llanddewi Castle and Western Slade, the author has made exten- sive use of archives to trace where possible the families which owned the houses down the years, and, more interestingly, those which lived in them. Prepared as a serious but readable study, it should give pleasure to all with an interest in the peninsula. The book is on sale in bookshops at £ 24.95, and while stocks last it is available to members at £ 19.50 per copy (plus post and packing at £ 2.50 per copy, U.K.) from our Publications Sales Officer.
