cloister inscriptions were taken from a manuscript rather than from a monumental source. The verses relating to Silvester of Evesham run thus In uetitum faciles fle[c]ti motus iuueniles 5 Hostibus ereptus cathedrali sede receptus, 10 Hec ego conpleui quondam spatio breuis eui. This epitaph gives a biography in brief of bishop Silvester. The Annals of Worcester supply dates for the events here commemorated. In 1215 Silvester was made prior of Worcester (1.3) and in 1216 was consecrated bishop at Perugia (11.4, 5). In 1218 he dedicated the cathedral church to the Virgin, St. Peter, and Saints Oswald and Wulfstan, (1.6), and on the day of the dedication translated the body of St. Wulfstan to a shrine (1.7). In the same year he deforested Horewell and Ambresley (1.8). In the previous year, 1217, the castle of Worcester (the castle of Urse d'Abitot) had been returned to the priory (1.9) and in 1216 the body of King John had been entombed at Worcester between the tombs of Saints Oswald and Wulfstan (1.9).
