who was knighted in June 1604, and Joh Conwey miles (p. 578) who was knighted 14 March 1604. So the Gough MS. cannot be earlier than 1604. Our manuscript is dated 1602 and lists the above named generosi without their titles. But from the fact that Sir William Hanmer of Fennes is so designated in the manuscript, although not actually knighted until 23 July 1603, it must be concluded that it could not have been written before the latter date, though not much later either. That shows the N.L.W. MS. to be at least a year earlier than the Gough MS. George Owen was obviously working on the treatise between 1602 and 1604, augmenting, emending, and re-writing it from time to time. The printed text based on the Gough MS. version differs in many ways from the N.L.W. manuscript, and contains much additional material, particularly in the sections listing the gentlemen of Cardiganshire and Pembrokeshire, their residences and wives. At the same time the earlier manuscript occasionally supplies information not in the printed text and it is often more accurate in detail. The statistical account of the hundreds, castles, etc., with which the description of each county normally begins, is omitted for Monmouthshire (p. 291) but can be supplied from the N.L.W. MS. Monmouthshiere hath in yt Hundreds xi, Castells xixen, Parish churches Cxxvij, Fayres in the yeere xxiij." Similarly the space left for the description of the people of Denbighshire (p. 551) can now be filled in they were Populouse and tall menne much quarrellinge discordes amonge gentlemenne." In the process of redaction minor errors crept into the later copy and there are scores of verbal and literal discrepancies. As instances of the superior authority of the earlier manuscript for topographical names we may cite llanwnno (Llanwonno in Glam- organ) and Wheeler (the river Chwiler in Flintshire) and compare them with the corrupt forms llan wnnio and Whater of the Gough MS. (pp. 306, 573 of the printed text). When the Cymmrodorion Society publishes the remaining portions describing Anglesey, Caernar- vonshire and Merioneth, the editor might profitably collate the two manuscripts. Heraldry is the subject of N.L.W. MS. 13687. It is an undated volume of 74 un- numbered loose folios, wanting a title-page. There is no explicit evidence of authorship but it is wholly in the autograph of George Owen who undoubtedly was also the compiler. The work describes in considerable detail the arms of some 63 members of notable Pem- brokeshire families and shows much first-hand information. Genealogical as well as heraldic lore is included in the descriptions of the arms.
