His father was employed at the Cyfarthfa Iron Works, and Hughes entered these works as a practical mechanic' at an early age. Later he migrated to Ebbw Vale, and afterwards, for a time, had a factory of his own at Newport. He became eventually the- managing director of the Millwall Iron and Shipbuilding Works, and remained in this capacity for many years..
