NOTES (a) ap Grono was correctly inserted by a later hand. The omission was accidental as is shown by §§ f, h. The earlier part of the pedigree may be compared with ABT 9a, 1a, c. Note that the female link, Ragaw verch Lyr, has been avoided by giving a pedigree to her husband Henwyn. (b) The mother of Catherine was Isabel daughter of Stephen, Duke of Bavaria. He was not emperor, and from this point the pedigree is fanciful. See Dwnn i. 11 note 9. (c) John, Duke of Somerset, was son of John Beaufort son of John of Gaunt. (d) Dafydd Llwyd of Llwydiarth, Amlwch, Twrcelyn, was living in 1352 (Record of Caernarvon p. 51). He is generally made the son of Cynwrig ap Gronwy ap Cynwrig ap lorwerth ap Hwfa ap Cynddelw, and this is probably correct. (Gutun Owain in Pen. 131 p. 100, Pen. 127 p. 67, etc). The false version given by Ieuan Brechfa is copied by several South Wales versions of the Tudor pedigree, e.g. Pen. 143 p. 43, Harl. 2414 fo. 61, Dwnn ii. 11. (f) Mauric ap Gwastailo. See PAR ic and note thereto. Some later pedigrees make Morfudd the daughter of Mevric arglwydd Gwent ap Ithel vrenin Gwent ap Rys ap Ivor to Morgan Hir (see PP § 59) (Pen. 128 p. 132, similarly Pen. 139 part i pp. 50, 358). (g) This version is perhaps correct. The text of A has been altered by a later hand to 'Elnor verch Philip ap Ivor o Gattrin verch Llywelyn,' a fiction found in North Wales versions. (See e.g. Gutun Owain copied by Robert Vaughan in Pen. 131 p. 181, Pen. 127 pp. 31, 70, 188). The matter is discussed by G. T. O. Bridgeman in The History of the Princes of South Wales, Wigan, 1876, pp. 240 ff., but the discussion is marred by quotations from the Book of the Golden Grove (c. 1765) which cannot be regarded as authoritative. (h) Gutun Owain makes Gwenllian the daughter of Ithel Fychan ab Ithel Gam (Pen. 131 p. 99). Similarly Pen. 127 p. 176. Both these versions are chronologically possible, but most later versions make her the daughter of Ithel Fychan ab Ithel Llwyd ab Ithel Gam (e.g. Pen. 127 p. 73) which is impossible. Ithel Fychan ab Ithel Llwyd was living in 1301 and Ithel Llwyd ab Ithel Gam in 1254 and later. (History of the family of Mostyn of Mostyn, London, 1925, p. 192). Ithel Gam is said to have been living in 1247. (J. Y. W. Lloyd, History of Powys Fadog, iii. 105). The pedigree of Ithel Gam of Tegeingl must be regarded as unknown. He is generally made the son of Maredudd ab Uchdrud ab Edwin (Pen. 131 pp. 105, 131, 186, Pen. 127 pp. 56, 63, 73, 129, etc.) but this is clearly too short by three generations. The introduction by Ieuan Brechfa of Philip ab Uchdrud, a man of Cyfeiliog, is no improvement. (i) This section is completely wrong and impossible. Gweurful was the daughter of Madog o'r Hendwr (living 1321, W. W. E. Wynn in Pen. 234 p. 9) ap lorwerth ap Madog ap Gruffudd ab Owain Brogyntyn. (Pen. 131 p. 99, Pen. 127 pp. 25, 71). The pedigree of Rhirid Flaidd is also wrong, see HL 13a and PP § 52 note. (j) Cadell is omitted as usual between Tewdwr and Einion. This is the first appearance known to me of the legend that Rhodri Mawr divided Wales between three of his sons. B says the same in slightly different words, but puts them in the order Annarod, Cadell, Mervynn. Elidir ap Sandde etc. cf. ABT ie, c. Mairchion gadarn. The usual epithet is gul. (k) Cf. ABT 9b.
