Sidney Low, who contributed a very comprehensive article on Stanley in the Dictionary of National Biography, had accepted without question the story of his youth as described in the Autobiography. Notwithstanding his obvious admiration for his subject, Low felt compelled to add that: 'Stanley was apt to "let himself go", without much thought for the consequences The foregoing account of Stanley's relationship with his 'second father' amply reinforces this caveat.
