COLLIERS' FAMILY BUDGETS IN 1911 I asked a few friends among the Rhondda colliers to keep an account of their family spendings. and to give me the average resulting over the period of their observations. At the present moment these budgets may be of public interest Family No. 1.—Husband (aged 40), wife (38). five children (14, 12, 10, 7, 1). Income. Husband (miner), 57s., son (miner), 15s. Total, 72s. per week. Expenditure. Bread, meat, groceries and clothing, 35s per week (all spent at the Co-operative Store) milk Is. 2d. per week; rent (including rates and taxes). 6s. 6d. per week; chapel, Is. per week; newspapers. 8d. per week; sick clubs, 6d. per week; insurance, Is. per month; coal, 4s. per month; gas 2s 6d. per month various, about 5s. per week. Family No. 2.-Husband (38), wife (34), six children. Income. Husband (repairer), 44s. per week. Expenditure (per week). Groceries, 15s., bread, 3s. meat, 5s.; milk. 1s. 9d. rent, 6s.; coal, Is. 6d. insurance, 9d.; newspapers, 7d.; sick clubs. 7d. No particulars given of money spent on clothing Family No. 3.-Husband (25), wife (23), baby (1), lodger (40). Income. Husband (miner), from 38s. to 50s. From lodger, 5s. 6d. Expenditure (per week). Husband (pit carpenter), 45s.; wife (dressmaker), 10s. Total, 55s. Expenditure (per week). Groceries (including bread), 15s. 6d.; meat, 4s. 6d.; Milk 2s.; vege- tables and fruit, 5s. coal, Is. oil, s. 2d. doctor, 6d.; sick club, Is.; insurance, 4s. 4d. newspapers, Is. 11 2d.; Clothing (per annum), about £ 14. Live in own house and pay £ 4 9s. 2d. rates and taxes. Family No. 6.—Husband, wife, and two children. Husband is a surfaceman at 3s. per day, plus percen- tage. In 1911 he lost two days through sleeping late and five days through shipping strike. Total earnings, £ 62 7s. Id. Paid to doctor, 9s. 6d; coal, £ 2 2s. 2d. infirmary, Is rent, £11 Is. Od.
