CORRESPONDENCE THE CHURCH MILITANT. To the Editor of The Welsh Oath*. Sir. Permit me one final word in reply to C. C. Bell. With regard to the words of Christ. Render, therefore unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's," it appears to me that anyone who uses this sentence to justify war must be very hard pressed. The questioners of the Saviour thought of catching Him in their net, taking for granted that he had to say yea or nay. He. hating hypocrisy and demanding consistency, answered as above, thereby laying down a principle applicable to every age. The claims of magistrates and rulers have their limit, inasmuch as God has also claims which the followers of Christ cannot afford to ignore. We all acknowledge our duty to the State, but earthly rulers have often asked their subjects to do wrong, and then conscience reminds men of their duty to God. The disciples of Christ refused to obey the magis- trates of their day. as stated in Acts iv. 19. and I fancy your correspondent will admit that they were right. We certainly cannot go far astray if we explain the meaning of the words of the Master, by his own actions, and thcee of His disciples. And by this standard we cannot find any justification whatever for war. I judge no man who thinks otherwise, but this is my view. H. C. W. Coram. 9m July, 1915.
