"The Treasures of Coal Tar," by Alexander Findlay, Aberystwyth. London Geo. Allen & Unwin, Ltd. 4s. 6d. Pp. 137. Just at the present time England is being brought face to face with many problems. Naval and military affairs appear to be most pressing, but we cannot afford to shut our eyes to the urgent need of realisation of the position of our country in the commercial sphere as well. Professor Findlay in his admirable preface points out the absolute necessity for a wider understanding by the public generally of the intimate relation between commerce and science. In the opening chapters the production and utilisation of coal gas and the accompanying by-products is clearly and simply explained, and the need for real economy involving the use of new and up to date plant strongly emphasised. No one having read this book, especially the later chapters can tail to realise the importance of chemical research. The chapter on molecular architecture will impress upon the general reader the place of pure theory in the world of practical commercial chemistry. A book of this kind cannot fail to be slightly academic in treatment, but those who commence to read it will go on to the end and will find that the production of ordinary chemicals has a romantic history and an absorbing interest apart from commercial considerations altogether.
