composer's own. are distinguished by simplicity and sincerity, qualities admirably reflected in the music. A graceful melody, flowing in a soothing andante, comes to an unconventional and rather striking ending; while the accompaniment has a dreamy waltz rhythm, in- terestingly varied and lightened by pleasing arpeggio effects. Quite an unpretentious piece of song-writmg, Baby o' Mine" succeeds by its appropriate simplicity, being just the type of morceau foi the nursery or the drawing room. "Llyfr y Proffwyd Amos." Nodiadau Eglurhaol gan y Parch. W. H. Harris, M.A., B.Litt. This is the title of a book by the Lecturer in Theology at St. David's College, Lampeter. It belongs to the series of constructive Bible Studies issued by the Welsh Church Inter-Diocesan Sunday S-.hool Union, and may be obtained from the Secretary, Rev. J. D. Jones, St. Deiniol's Vicarage, Bangor, or from the S.P.C.K., by whom it has been admirably printed. The manual is a fine example of what can be done by systematic, orderly fore-arrangement to inculcate definite teach- ing in the Sunday School. If haphazard, slothful methods continue to prevail then it is no longer an excuse that a better way has not been shown. A more competent scholar could not have been found to deal with the Book of Amos than the versatile Lamptter lecturer. Mr. Harris has the gift of exposition, and his combined attention to detail and unity of treatment is most noteworthy. It is impossible in the space at our command to enter into the fertile hints and critical comments which abound in his volume. It is enough to say that they exhibit at every point the hand of a master of all the best literature on the subject. He traces the lofty teachings of the herdsman of Tekoah to religious and ethical conceptions rooted in but transcending the notions of earlier times. He explains how the prophet spoke and wrote for his own age and he sketches the historical conditions necessary to the understanding of his message. But our author also recognises that the prophetic writings are charged with meanings which refer to wider realms of thought and vaster ranges of time than probably the seer himself realised. So whilst rendering full justice to the genuine results of criticisms he makes the study of the permanently authoritative spiritual truths his one great concern. Mr. Harris deals some heavy blows at A SEARCHLIGHT FOR THINKERS, Containing a Bird's-Eye View of Things that Matter. "THE REVIEW OF REVIEWS" THE INDISPENSABLE MAGAZINE FOR BUSY PEOPLE. REVIEW OF REVIEWS OFFICE, WHITEFRIARS HOUSE, CARMELITE STREET, LONDON, E.C.4.' the towering branches of present day materialism. Fortified by the Report of the Atchbishop's Committee on "Christianity and Indus- trial Problems to which he refers in his notes, he might safely have gone further and attacked the root as embedded in our modem, social order. But the work merits careful study and will be warmly appre- ciated by lovers of religious education. There is a fascination in the author's vigorous style and faultless Welsh which invests the book, from cover to cover, with unflagging interest and lasting worth. J.H.J "Casgliad o Donau ac Emynau:" At wasanaeth Ysgol Ramadegol Rhiwabon, wedi eu dethol gan D. B. Jones, B.A. This is a well-selected collection of Welsh hymns and hymn-tunes specially made for use at the Ruabon Grammar School. It is a repre- sentative selection, made with good taste, of the best and most popular hymns, and of the best and most popular hymn-tunes. It is indeed a typical Cymanfa Ganu programme for adults. It includes what many such programmes include, often with lamentable effect,-tunes by local composers. In this case these tunes (and they give local colour to the book), are fully worthy of inclusion. They are the old favourite Rhosymedre," by the Rev. J. D. Edwards (1805-1885), who was Vicar of Rhosymedre; Glanllymwy by Mr. Emlyn Davies, Trevor, Llangollen and Hwyrol Weddi," by Dr. Caradog Roberts, Rhos. The first of these was in the programme of the Na- tional Cymanfa Ganu at Aberystwyth in 1916, and the second in the Corwen National Cymanfa this year. The hymns and tunes are all for adults; it is unfortunate that no hymns for children are included. A further drawback in the collection is that the tunes are in the usual four-parts, so that tenor and bass must be supplied either by the staff or by the older boys or by both. To sing merely the two upper parts in harmonised arrangement for four parts is bald, unmusical and alto- gether reprehensible. We suggest that if anothe: edition is issued some tunes should be added in two-parts or three-parts harmony. The issue of a collection for a particular school has its merits; the book will have happy associations in years to come for those educated with- in the walls of the Grammar School. LJ.R.
