nation which can secure the Rev. David Williams and the Rev. David Phillips as joint Principals of Bala College, which is to be retained for a fourth year's ministerial training after three years at Aberystwyth, is fortunate indeed, and the men who will have the opportunities of that fourth year are favoured beyond the majority of their brethren. Bala has played a great part, not only in the history of Calvinistic Metho- dism, but in the history of Wales, and it was not an extravagant, although a very uncommon, compliment that was paid to it when the first principal of the first University College of Wales returned to Bala to succeed his great father as its principal. We do not believe there is a single Welsh educationalist living, to whatever church, denomination, or sect he may belong, who would deny that in an unique sense Bala was the humble collegiate rock from which the Welsh University was ultimately carved. Be that as it may, we are glad it has not been cast into the category of schools, at any rate until the day when the whole question of theological education in Wales can be and is considered, not denominationally but inter- denominationally. That day is not far distant, and we feel confident that the three principals of the joint colleges are waiting and hoping for its dawn. Welsh Periodical Literature. After nearly eighty years of respect- able and almost prosperous residence in Denbigh, Y Faner has removed to berystwyth. In no part of Wales, not even in its own home, did Baner ac Amserau Cymru (Y Faner Fach a'r Faner Fawr respectively) exercise such political dominion as in this county. The elections of 1868 and 1885 in this county are among the romances of modem Welsh politics, and they were largely Baner triumphs, al- though there must have been something in the county, too, as the Rev. David Rees, Editor of Y Diwygiwr suspected years before 1868. The removal, how- ever, makes us think of the great work done by the Baner in the past, and of its unbending attitude on issues of principle. The story of its initiation has been told by Professor Gwynn Jones with his usual skill in his life of Thomas Gee, and a fascinating story it is. The nom-de-plume of one alone of its contributors, Y Gohebydd," brings to the mind half-a-dozen of the great national crusades of the last century, in each of which the Baner was the first to tilt a lance in the lists on the national side. By the way, who, having the time, will take the trouble to tell the story of the periodical press of Wales during the nineteenth century ? Y Dysgedydd, in its February issue, has a list (a very incomplete one) of its contemporaries during its hundred years of life. The following names chosen from that list- Y Diwy- giwr, Yr Haul, Y Crordcl, Yr Amserau, Y Traeth- odydd, Seren Gomer-will of themselves show what a fascinating and entertaining story could be told.
