In this there was a striking combination of the noble qualities of the nurse and the minister of the Gospel. Hugh Owen passed away in 1699, and although he has thus been dead for more than 200 years, his memory is still fragrant, and his Christlike life of self-sacrifice and service are occasionally still referred to. His beautiful spirit manifested itself in his last will, which is a document of great interest, par- taking as it does of the nature of a homily. The following is a correct copy of it "In ye name of God. Amen. The 7th day of March in ye year of our Lord 1678, I, Hugh Owen of Bronyclydwr, in ye Parish of Llaneyrin, in the Co. of Meirion and Diocess of Bangor, a Dissenting Protestant Pastor of ye Congregational persuasion, tho. of a crazy (frail) health, yet of a sound and disposing mind and memory, praise be given to Almighty God for ye same, do make and ordain this my last will and Testament in the manner and form following, that is to say first and principally com- mend my soul into the hands of Almighty God, my Creator, hoping to be saved thro' the atone- ment of Jesus Christ my Redeemer, and my body to the earth to be buryed at the discretion of my executors, hereinafter named. And as for what worldly estate it hath pleased God to bless me with, all I give bequeath and devise one moiety or half part of all my messuages, lands and tene- ments called Bron-y-clydwr, Govolion, Ycha, Govolion issa (sic), Trychiad a Moelmon unto my beloved wife, Martha Owen, during the term of her natural life in liew and instead of a Dower or Joynture. Item, I give and bequeath to my said beloved wife one moiety or half part of all my orchards at Michs. next after my decease to be gathered and harvested at her proper charge. Item, I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife all the rest of my personal estate and chattels and all my implements of husbandry and housewifery, subject to the payment of such of my proper debts as remain unpaid after ye payment of one hundred and 30 pounds (R130) debt by my son John Owen, as is hereafter specified, and also subject to the payment of such three Legacies as are hereafter in this my will given and bequeathed by me for ye poor. Item, I give and bequeath all the other moiety or half part of all my messuages, lands and tenements unto my said son, John Owen, his Heires, assignes, subject to the payment of one hundred and £ 30 of my proper debts or sufficiently bound for the payment of same within one year after my decease, and also further subject to the payment of four score and ten pounds within two vears after my decease in manner and form follow- ing, viz., thirty pounds to my eldest daughter then living, and three score more pounds between the rest of my youngest children, to be equally divided amongst them, share and share alike. And in case any of my said younger children shall hap- pen to die before they shall severally receive ye said part and portion then I doe hereby give and bequeath the part and portion of her and ym. so dying to ye rest of my younger children, to be equally divided among ym., share and share alike. In case my younger children die without issues lawfully begotten, otherwise I give and bequeath share so dying to their children lawfully begotten (sic). Itm., I give and bequeath to my son, John Owen, the other moiety or half part of all corn, hay and fruits of all my orchards at Michs. next after my decease to be harvested by him at his sole and proper charge. Item, I give and be- queath to my said son, John Owen, all my books whether Hebrew or Greek, or Latin or English, contravertable or convertable (sic) upon the Bible, or Concordances to ye Holy Scripture and ye rest of all my English books I give and bequeath to my said beloved wife. And from and after the payment of all my said debts and legacies and my funeral charges defrayed and death of my said beloved wife, I g've, bequeath and devise all my said messuages, lands and tenements called Bron- yclydwr, Govolion Ycha, Govolion issa, Trychiad and Moelmon to my said son, John Owen, his heires and assignes for ever. And, now consider- ing that the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth in the Earth and doth whatever He will in all the Kingdoms and familyes of the world, putting down the mighty from their seats and exalting ym of low degree, I do designedly forbear to men- tion any further particulars of the same nature with those specified with respect to my said be- loved wife, son and daughters, choosing rather to beseech the Father of all Mercys (who is Father of the Fatherless and a Judge of the widows) yet he would for ye sake of his blessed Son enable me in faith to committ and commend ym wholely and solely to His care, direction and goodness both as to wt I have herein mentioned concerning and also as to wt may befall ym and yr posterity and mine hereafter for ever. That how- ever it may please Him to dispose of yr outward and worldly concerns here, all may be over-ruled to His glory and yr everlasting welfare and happi- ness. And I also do hereby strictly charge upon them all to follow ye Lord fully like Caleb all yr days, assureing of ym upon ye experience of my whole life, yt if they do so they will not fail at having wt is best for ym here and being fully per- suaded it will be ye way for vm to enjoy mansions of glory hereafter. Itm, I give and bequeath twenty shillings to ye poor brethren of the dis- senting congregation yt I am related to, to be paid to ye Deacons of ye same and by them dis- tributed as ye Lord should direct ym. Itm, I give and bequeath ten shillings to ye poor of the parish of Llanegrin to be distributed by my be- loved wife according- to her discretion. Itm, I give and bequeath five shillings to my poor re- lation, Alice Prior, of the Parish aforesaid. Itm, I order and appoint these Legacies to be paid within one year after my decease.-And I do
