David Davies (neither Catholic nor Roman) was asked what he thought of it all, he said he was refreshed. And why, do you suppose, was the Rev. David Davies re- freshed? Because not a name had been quoted from the time when the Welsh acknowledged the Pope. Canon Joyce, in his address, had referred to David, Dubricius, Daniel, and Teilo, men who lived, so Mr. Davies says, "when Christianity in the land was simple and unostentatious (like a Baptist chapel). But not a name had escaped the lips of Canon Joyce, blessed man, from that deplorable period when the poor, ignorant, super- stitious Welsh were cringing before the Pope. Not a name, that is to say, had escaped the lips of Canon Joyce such as St. Elbodugus, Nennius, Asser, Howel Dda, Ricemarchus, Geoffrey of Monmouth, Llywelyn the Great, Giraldus Cambrensis, Llywelyn the Last, Dafydd ab Gwilym, Owen Glyndwr, the greatest, the most glorious in the history of Wales, not one of these or of others like them was mentioned, being Catholic and Roman; and because they were left out, so the Rev. David Davies himself told a reporter, he was refreshed. Funny Welshman. But what of the Church in Wales that claims to be the historic religion of the Welsh people, and holds the ancient Catholic sites? What, I say, of the Church in Wales, whose officials, in the presence of Greeks and Protestants, in St. David's Cathedral, amid such a concourse of people, on such an occasion, have to suppress the, greatest names of the Welsh tradition ? "Catholic, not Roman"; "Oriental in its origin, not Western." And they had to leave out the name of Asser,. Archbishop of St. Davids, King Alfred's biographer, who inhabited the spot on which they were standing. They had to omit the name of Ricemarchus, to whom we are indebted for almost everything we know of St. David. They dared not utter the name of Shine, holy Star, Spirit of Truth, 0- shine, My pilgrim path illumine from above; Guide where to us is born the King Divine,- Epiphany of Love. To His blest feet I would all treasures bring: A Virgin's Babe-He comes to bear my strife O God of God, my Prophet, Priest, and King,- Epiphany of Life. Gerald the Welshman, St. David's most illus- trious protagonist. And why? Because these men, who would have died rather than play false to the Welsh tradition (no English agents, they), were Catholic and Roman, because they were Catholic and Roman and Occidental. Let me say at once that I am certain the Rev. David Davies did not intend all this. I am certain that he is, and always was, a Welsh patriot. But this is what he has got himself involved in by not sticking to Vavasor Powell. The Dean of St. Davids called on the congre- gation to say the Nicene Creed in Welsh. After this it was sung in English (for English is the language par excellence of St. David's Cathedral). Then the Patriarch of Alexandria recited it in Greek. Lastly, the Russians, chanted it in Russian. Four times, mark you, the Nicene Creed was gone through in four distinct languages, two of them western (Welsh and English), two of them eastern (Greek and Russian). The Rev. Philip Jones, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Connexion, was carried away. He was thinking, and, as he thought, his mind flew like Noah's dove and rested on the head of Mr. Rudyard Kipling. East is East, and West is West, And never the twain shall meet." To-day, said the Moderator to himself, this prophecy is falsified. To-day, here and now, it is proved to be wrong. The Moderator meant well, but alas, the Creed was not the same. And where it was not the same was precisely that which makes East East and West West, and keeps them apart. They had indeed met as one, but only to say that they were two. In four languages, they said it, they sang it, they recited it, they chanted it, as who would say We are One but Two; We are Two but One. Two in their views about God, but One in their opposition to Rome. They were united only on a negation. Their gathering was but an anti- Roman gesture. THE EPIPHANY..
