President: RICHARD HANBURY TENISON 8 Pentonville, Newport, Gwent 'Hadlow', Llanwenarth Citra, Abergavenny, Gwent NP7 7EY GMENT LOCAL HISTORY Formerly "Presenting Monmouthshire" No. 63 EDITORIAL The editor has had the good fortune of spending the summer in Canada, during which she spent time visiting many museums. Their history really begins with immigration from Europe so they do not have the centuries of past to delve into like us. A city like Quebec where many of the houses in the old town date back to the 18th century is unique and even Kingston, situated on Lake Ontario, where many of the properties belong to the late Victorian era is unusual. However, perhaps because the Canadians have less 'history' much of it is preserved better; although in the big cities, modern development is equally as ruthless as it is in Europe. The Canadians are particularly good on outdoor interpretation, for instance, in the Rockies information on the history of particular glaciers is provided. Another forte is their museum buildings; frequently the buildings are more impressive than their collection and any curator would envy their spaciousness. Mrs. Jane Pearson, formerly editor of this Journal is shortly leaving Gwent, she came here in the mid-1970s to curate Chepstow Museum. For the last four years she has been working as Curator for Torfaen Museum Trust at Pontypool. In October she takes up her new post as Director of the Merthyr Tydfil Heritage Trust whose headquarters occupy the house where Joseph Parry the composer was born. We wish her well in her new job. The cover of this edition of the Journal is unusually not related to its contents. This photograph of photographers on the banks of the Monmouthshire canal comes from a collection of negatives donated to Torfaen Museum Trust by the Pontypool Free Press. The negatives date from the first World War to the 1930s and 1940s. Nothing is known about this photograph. Does anyone recognise its exact location on the canal? or any of the people in it or even know anything about local photographic clubs? The Journal or Torfaen Museum Trust would be pleased to hear from anyone who could provide information about it. Chairman: A. G. MEIN Secretary: ARTHUR DAVIES Editor: MRS. ANNA TUCKER Autumn 1987
