Shortly before Christmas in 1987 a wall collapsed in the Abbey Church at Capel-y-ffin. The Father Ignatius Memorial Trust now faces the formidable task of raising a large sum of money to repair the damage. The collapse brought down several tons of masonary into the church from the south wall. The church has been closed to the public in case of further such incidents happening and warning notices have been posted. Possible remedial action will either be to get a professional assessment of a project to stabilise the walls by fluid cement injection or to reduce the walls to a safe height. An estimate of the possible costs indicates that the Trust will have to raise £ 10,000 to provide for unforseen contingencies. It is an important shrine in the religious history of our county and every effort must be made to conserve it for future generations. Donations can be sent to the Hon. Secretary, The Father Ignatius Memorial Trust, Park House, 67 Park Street, Abergavenny NP7 5YD. Donors will receive copies of future newsletters.
