Pedigree of the Family of Gunter of Abergavenny and of London G. W. Gunter In his 'A History of Monmouthshire'-Vol I, Part II— The Hundred of Abergavenny, page 161-Colonel J. A. Bradney set out a 'Pedigree of the Family of Gunter of Abergavenny and of London'. At the head of this pedigree he wrote: "A good deal of this pedigree is from an engraved sheet by John Evan Thomas, the sculptor. He, however, is quite wrong in making James Gunter to be the fourth son of Robert of the Priory; two or three generations are missing." The purpose of this paper is to show that there were indeed three generations missing between Robert Gunter of the Priory, who lived from c.1540 to 1615, and James Gunter of the Gunter Mansion in Cross Street, Abergavenny, who lived from 1693 to 1752. The missing generations were those of 1. Richard Gunter (I), third son of Robert Gunter of the Priory, who lived rom c. 1570 to 1648; 2. Richard Gunter (II), eldest son of Richard Gunter (I), who lived from say 1600 to 1662/3, and 3. Richard Gunter (III), eldest son of Richard Gunter (II), who lived from say 1654 to 1701. His only son was the aforementioned James Gunter. The evidences that link Robert Gunter of the Priory, Abergavenny, with James Gunter of the Gunter Mansion in Cross Street, Abergavenny, are as follows: Milborne 664. 22 March 1614. A Lease in which Robert Gunter of Abergavenny leased for the term of 1000 years messuages and named parcels of land, including Cae yr gwraig, in the parish and lordship of Llanelen, co Mon., to Richard Gunter (I), his third son; these lands being the same as those defined in the Inq post mortem on Robert Gunter of the Priory, Abergavenny, on 21 September 1615. PRO C/142/684/36 26064. Milborne 1412. 8 June 1648. The Will of Richard Gunter (I) of Monk Street, Abergavenny, dated 8 June 1648, proved 6 July 1648. Richard (I) refers in his Will to his grandchildren Mary and Elizabeth, but not to their brother Richard (III) who had not yet been born. Richard (I) left his mansion
