Brian Foster's account of the houses of correction and the county gaol at Usk is a valuable contribution to the institutional history of the county. Two of Gwent's early industrial towns, Blaenavon and Tredegar, are profiled by John Evans and John Hilling while Ebbw Vale Steel Works is remembered by Howard Robinson. In all four articles we are reminded that buildings are made by people in both senses. It is remarkable how closely knit the communities in our industrial towns became. The buildings at the heart of our communities are truly a part of them. Our four authors have rendered a great service in highlighting them for us.
