INFERIORITY COMPLEX Nature, origin, effects and remedy AN Inferiority Complex is a disturbance in the Sub-conscious Mind which manifests itself in various forms of disability-in self-consciousness and lack of confidence-in nervousness and nervy- ness — in causeless fear-in the worry habit-in depression and a sense of futility — in lassitude and lack of enterprise. Its origin lies in some deep emotional ex- perience or some destructive influence during the early stages of personality- development,-a dominating parent, for example, or a sarcastic teacher-an up- bringing in meekness and unreasoning submission-bullying at school—playing second-fiddle to a more favoured brother or sister — conflicts between temperament and environment-suppression of some heartfelt desire in favour of a more cautious pursuit of material advantage. In such experiences as these does an Inferiority Complex" find its beginnings-the source may be entirely forgotten, but its effects remain in the form of a disturbance centre" in Sub-consciousness which sends out powerful negative impulses overcoming and paralysing your positive impulses in the fulfilment of which lies all the pleasures of achievement and the joys of living. You cannot control these impulses-to attempt to fight them by the direct effort of the conscious mind only serves to increase their strength. You cannot control them-but you can remove them altogether by eradi- cating from your Sub-conscious Mind the trouble from which they spring, building up in their place powerful positive impulses, generating forces within yourself which will help instead of hinder, which will carry you forward towards a happier, fuller, more suc- cessful life instead of holding you back from all that makes life worth living. This you can do-yourself-by your own efforts—in the privacy of your home. The British Institute of Practical Psychôlogy exists to make the principles of psychology available to all men and women in a form they can easily understand-and in a form they can easily apply to. themselves, in reconstructing their personalities, in achieving that true happiness which is their right, in finding a successful solution to their personal problems, in realising their ambitions and desires. There is nothing magical or mystical in the methods of the Institute-they simply help you to help yourself-to develop and use the enormous power of a new self which is lying dormant and suppressed beneath the cumbrous, clumsily and haphazardly-con- structed structure of your old self. Un- happiness, depression, self-consciousness, a sense of futility, a feeling of being misunder- stood, lack of confidence, constant worrying, are not an inevitable part of the structure of your personality-they are symptoms of something wrong within, which you can put right.
