Ornithological Jtatea for 1901. By T. W. PROGER AND D. R. PATERSON. SOURING 1901, the occurrence of some of the rarer species in the ^J^g county has been noted. Black Tern (Hydrochelidon nigra). Two of this species were shot at Newton Nottage on May 18th. They were males in summer plumage. They were also noted in many parts of the country about the same time. To the County of Glamorgan the bird is an occasional visitor.* Black Cock (Tetrao tetrix). One was shot at Hirwain on March ist. The birds nest in Breconshire, and probably wander over. Formerly they were common enough in the hilly part of this county. Gadwall (Anas strepera) was shot at Gelligaer on October 3rd, and sent to the local bird-stuffer. It was evidently making for one of the small ponds in the neighbourhood at the time. It has been recorded in the county once before, having been taken in a decoy near Swansea some years agof. Two or three are usually seen about the Severn in the season, though the bird is rare in the West of England and South Wales. Pomatorhine Skua ( Stercorarius pomatorhinus). Though this occurrence was not during this year, it is as well to note that there is an immature specimen in the Cardiff Museum which was said to have been shot on the East Moors, Cardiff, by a fisherman named Stelfox many years ago. There has hitherto been no record of it in the county. Birds of Glamorgan," p. 127. t he cit., p. 99.
