Ornithological Notes 1965-66 By H. MORREY SALMON These notes include the more unusual and interesting occurrences in Glamorgan in the years 1965 and 1966. They are summarised in this form for the convenience and interest of members of the Society. Those who desire more detailed records can consult the Glamorgan Annual Bird Reports, 1965 and 1966, published jointly by the Ornithological Section of the Society and the Gower Ornithological Society. The two more regular species of Divers, the Great Northern and the Red-throated, were both seen off Gower and at the Eglwys Nunydd reservoir on a number of occasions, but the less frequent Black-throated Diver occurred twice, on both occasions at Kenfig Pool, in November, 1965, and December, 1966. Of the Grebes, all five species were recorded but without a nesting record of the Great Crested, though the Little Grebe seems to be recovering a little as a breeding species. Slavonian and Black-necked Grebes were seen as usual off Whiteford in both winters and the latter species at Eglwys Nunydd reservoir. The rather rarer Red-necked Grebe occurred in both years; one off Whiteford in January, 1965, and two at Llanishen reservoir in February-March, 1966, one staying until 22nd April. Of sea-birds: single Storm Petrels were seen briefly from Lavernock Point in June, 1965; Manx Shearwaters were also seen there and off Gower in flocks of considerable numbers in both summers, as were some Gannets; Fulmar Petrels again bred in Gower in small numbers, as also did Cormorants; a pair of Shags nested on Worms Head in 1965 as usual, but not in 1966. The Herons at the Penrice heronry continued successfully but the Hensol birds suffered from disturbance in both breeding seasons. At Eglwys Nunydd reservoir a Purple Heron was seen on 6th June and another for several days in October, 1965; the first time this species has been recorded in the county. A Bittern was at Oxwich on 10th March, 1965, and another somewhat rare species, the Spoonbill, occurred twice; one being at Eglwys Nunydd for two days in April and another was at Whiteford in October, 1965. There were few variations from the regular pattern of breeding or wintering water-fowl. Shoveler were seen in only very small numbers in the Burry estuary; Garganey were present in the Kenfig Eglwys Nunydd area in April-May, 1966, but only one pair which, apparently, did not stay to breed. Tufted Duck continued to nest satisfactorily, and wintering Pochard at Eglwys Nunydd reservoir reached a peak of nearly 700 in November, 1966, rather lower than the exceptional numbers of 1964. Long-tailed Ducks were again recorded and single Ferruginous Ducks were at Hensol and Eglwys Nunydd in both years. Single Velvet Scoters were seen off Whiteford in October and at Eglwys Nunydd in December, 1966. Eider-Duck in the Burry estuary were probably present in every month of both years al- though in somewhat smaller numbers than recently, and all three species of saw-billed ducks, Red-breasted Merganser, Goosander and Smew occurred. White-fronted Geese were very few but the normal small numbers of Brent Geese seen at Whiteford. Whooper and Bewick's Swans came to Kenfig Pool-Eglwys Nunydd reservoir as usual; a family party of two adults and three cygnets, of the latter $ecies, spent some weeks on a pool near Welsh St. Donats in 1965 and a single adult came -re again in 1966. Regrettably, there was a recurrence of wanton and illegal shooting some of these swans at Kenfig Pool. Of the Raptores: Buzzards and Sparrow Hawks bred with some success and Kestrels reared to do remarkably well, one pair, at least, rearing six young successfully. All
